Mothman Festival 2019

10/3/2019

This blog post has taken me a little longer than expected to post because I am getting ready for my WEDDING and my HONEYMOON!
Anywayyyyys, Mothman Festival 2019 was a blast. Mothman Festival is, by far, my favorite and most successful and fun to sell at, and this year was no different than the previous 3 years I attended before this years.
Mothman Festival is held on Main Street in Point Pleasant, WV. As a vendor, you will arrive around 4 to set up. The street will be blocked off, but when you get there simply tell the event staff that you are a vendor and they will let you in and direct you to the spot you were emailed about.
When signing up for the Mothman Festival as a merchandise or artist, you have two options - use their big canopy with less space that is already set up, or bring your own. I always bring my own canopy so my space is slightly less crowded and I have more room to display my work. Mothman Festival staff provides you with one table, but you must provide your own if you need more than one. You also need to bring your own chairs!
Set up is easy if you are able to park close to your spot (which you should). I typically set up my canopy, chairs, tables, tablecloths and any shelving Friday night and set up maybe half of my art and leave the rest in bins in the canopy to finish setting up early Saturday morning.
Here are some tips if you are new:
  • The staff offers paid vendor parking which is SUPER nice as it gets crazy busy and attendee parking can be miles away. Just pay for the parking.
  • During set up Friday evening I was making quite a few sales, so definitely come prepared for selling things Friday night.
  • The festival does not officially start until 10 AM, however the Mothman 5K starts around 8 AM, so I try to get there around 8:30 AM to be open and ready for the runners. Trust me, it is worth it.
  • Bring a helper!! Even two. It gets hot, busy, and sometimes overwhelming. It definitely is nice to have help and take a 10 minute breather.
  • Pack lots of water and some snacks. It gets very hot and very busy, so you might not be able to leave your booth for hours at a time. They have plenty of delicious food trucks and fair food available, but the waits for them can be long as times.
  • Pack sunscreen. I don't because I am under my canopy 90% of the time, but if you plan on walking around for an extended period of time you may get burnt.
  • Do not plan any major events the weekend after. I did that once, and I sold out of most of my stock at the festival that I did not have much inventory for the event the weekend after.
  • BOOK YOUR HOTEL 6 MONTHS IN ADVANCE (AT LEAST). If you want the convenience of having a hotel less than 10 minutes away, book it way early.
  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN!! You will be meeting and talking to hundreds, if not thousands of people that are into the same weird stuff as you are. I am somewhat introverted, so I have to take the week before the festival or keep to myself to get the energy to socialize with everybody. It is well worth it, because you will meet some great folks! Already counting down the days and have my hotel booked for Mothman Festival 2020!
Below are a photo of my set up and some new designs that I made for the festival that will be in my store once I get back from my honey moon!

Pop Con 2019 Experience

Pop Con 2019.... where do i even begin?! Not only is West Virginia Pop Con my local comic con, but it is the first comic con I ever sold at! Not only that, this event marked my 5 year anniversary of when I started selling my art and crafts as my full time career! Needless to say, I was very excited for this event and my hopes were very high, needless to say, West Virginia Pop Culture Convention 2019 did not disappoint!

WV Pop Con is not the biggest con out there, but it is loved and well attended by locals. Load in is very easy, and parking is free. There are not any huge intimidating loading docks, and you do not need to move your car to a parking garage. It is just a wholesome home town comic con that the folks of the north eastern West Virginia love and hold dear to their heart. I highly recommend this con to new an experience artists and vendors alike. I am already counting down the days to WV Pop Con 2020!

Walker Stalker Cleveland 2019 Experience

8/13/2019

Oh, Walker Stalker Cleveland.

Where do I even begin?!  Rewind to late last year when I saw that there was going to be a Walker Stalker event under 4 hours from my house. Cool! That is an event I have wanted to do. Early this year, I decided to sign up. Regular artist alley booths were sold out with only corner spaces left. Dropped $350 on said corner space because I have heard great things about Walker Stalker.

Well, with only a little over a month or so before the event, all of these news articles kept popping up essentially about how awful Walker Stalker was becoming. Great. Now I was at a cross roads of whether or not I should try to get my $350 back or suck it up and just go for it and try to make as much money as possible. In the end, I decided to go and try to make back as much money as possible. A friend I took with me came to the rescue and used her hotel rewards points for a free stay for the weekend. All in all, I made just enough money to cover the table and gas to get there and back.

The event was well organized, plenty of table space, and staff was friendly. The customers that did stop by my booth were friendly and excited to be there as well. Other than that, the con just fell short. I swear attendance did not even reach 2,000 people. There were probably fewer than 50 vendors. The two booths beside me packed up and left Saturday night. That's how slow foot traffic was.

Needless to say, I will not be returning to future Walker Stalker events, but hey! At least I could hit up two Inns in Wizards Unite right from the convention floor!

Below is a photo of my booth and a video of my display.

Frankfortcon 2019 Experience

I attended Frankfortcon in Frankfort, KY at the Capital Plaza Hotel on July 13, 2019 as an artist in the artist alley. I figured this con would be kind of small, but I had never done it before so I decided to give it a go.

There was construction going on all around the hotel which made it rather difficult to navigate around. Parking was limited in front of the hotel, so I parked my car in the parking garage across the street from the hotel. Parking was free, thankfully, but I had to haul my stuff in my dolly across a busy intersection. This was kind of stressful. It was smooth, thankfully. After that, load in was a breeze. There was plenty of space around my booth, so setting up was quick and easy.

I decided to stay at the hotel the con was held in for convenience reasons. While the lobby and breakfast buffet were nice, the rooms were lackluster. The hotel was definitely not worth the price, even with the discount code the con coordinators graciously provided. If I attend this con in the future, I will definitely be staying at a cheaper hotel to cut down on my travel expenses.

The con was well organized, staff was friendly, and the hours were not too long. Artist alley spaces were a tad pricey for the size of the con, but I understand that having the con at the hotel might have been expensive. While I expected the con to be small, I was surprised with the amount of foot traffic and sales I made. While it was busier than I had anticipated, the con was not super profitable, so I will not be returning next year. However, I highly recommend this con to artists or vendors that live close enough that they would not have to have a hotel expense.

This con has a TON of potential. More than one con goer told me that the area needed something like this, so there is support from the community. I hope to see it flourish and continue to grow. Frankfort is not far from Lexington, so Frankfortcon is a great alternative for those that get intimidated by the crowds or prices at Lexington Comic Con but still want to experience a con.

While I will not be attending next year, I do hope to return in the future once this con has had the opportunity to evolve and grow!

Youngstown Comic Con 2019 Experience

7/14/2019

I was extremely excited for this con this year, and it did not disappoint! It is a small, hometown con, but the community around the con is so very supportive and it absolutely shows.

The con is at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, OH. Free parking is provided for vendors (not sure about attendants. If it is not free, it is very very cheap).  Set up is Friday evening or Sunday morning before the con starts. I typically do not like setting up the morning of because it puts too much pressure on me, but the show does not start until 11, so it is completely doable. Speaking of when the con starts, Saturday hours were 11-7 while Sundays were 11-5. I absolutely love this. Cons absolutely do not need to be 10+ hours long - it exhausts vendors and patrons alike - and the staff at Youngstown Comic Con understand.

Load in is very easy. You are provides with an 8 foot table and two chairs/passes. Staff was very courteous and even helped pull my dolly for me! Attendance was about 5,000, but do not let that fool you! Foot traffic is consistent, heavy, and constantly flowing.  The con went by extremely quickly. I highly recommend to anybody interested, new artists to those with much more experience. I already can't wait for next year!

Tricon WV 2019 Experience

6/15/2019

I attended Tricon WV in Huntington, WV on 6/8/2019 as an artist in the artist alley. I was very excited to attend this event because this con is in my top 5 favorite events. This was my 3rd year selling at this event, and I was not disappointed!
Tricon is a one day event, but don't let that fool you! It is well attended and foot traffic is consistent up until the last hour.
Load in is the evening before or the morning of. You can park your car right on the street or in the small lot outside of the loading dock which makes load in a breeze. You can park in these places for free during set up and during the actual event. You get a roomy 10x10 space with an 8 foot table and curtains provided for no extra cost.
Hours were from 9 to 6. One of the nice workers will come around asking if you'd like to donate an item to the charity auction, which is something I always try to do. The charity auction was held at 4 o clock and the cosplay contest at 5 o clock. The day goes by very fast because it is so busy, so I always try to pack a lunch!
This is a great event for folks just starting out because booth fees are inexpensive, but it is also great for those with more experience under their belts because it is such a well attended event. I highly recommend it to anybody that is into well ran, good old fashioned, home town cons! I already cannot wait until next year!

Megacon Orlando 2019 Experience

5/22/2019

Picture
I spent the last week or so in Orlando for Megacon 2019 and had such a blast! Now I am here to tell you about my experience and kind of review how it is being an artist in their Artist Alley.

Orlando is a little under a 14 hour drive for me. So, while the con is 4 days long, I had to dedicate a day to driving there and driving back. As an artist, you are only allowed to set up on Thursday, the day of the first day of the con. I personally try to avoid this as much as I can because for me it just stresses me out and puts too much pressure on me to set up and sell in the same day. However, load in was a breeze for such a big convention center with so many artists and vendors setting up. The first day is not over until 9 pm. I personally did not enjoy staying that late because the con starts at 9:30 AM the next morning. By the time you walk out of the convention center (it's HUUUUGE!!), get some food, get to your car, get ready the next morning, and get to the convention center by 9:30, you're lucky to get 8 hours of sleep. I swear, I'm getting to the good stuff!

They moved the con to a different side of the convention center this year. While you have to walk about a half a mile from your car to your booth (not even kidding - my phone tracks my steps!) the exercise is nice and there is a TON of parking right in front of the entrance. I definitely prefer the con to be on that side of the Orange County Convention Center, and I hope they keep it there for years to come! Parking is $10 for attendees and vendors, so you're looking to spend about $40 in parking unless you get a hotel within walking distance. I did not do this because I could get a hotel 20 minutes away for half the price. I have done cons in the past that give you parking slips for the their vendors and artists to give them free and discounted parking. I wish they would start implementing something of that nature to help their artists and vendors out! While there is plenty of parking right in front of the entrance this year, traffic can get VERY congested right outside the pay booth and about a half a mile or so in front of the convention center. Just plan to leave 15 minutes early.

As always with a con of this size, the foot traffic was continuously heavy with no slow periods. While foot traffic was good, the flow of foot traffic was not. The layout was wonky and I feel like a lot of people missed going down multiple aisles. The aisles to the artist alley were not labeled, so it made it very difficult for even those looking for my booth to find my booth. However, there was a large overhead sign that read "Artist Alley" that helped a bit. Even with the flow of traffic not being the best, the foot traffic in general was constant from the minute the con opened to the very last minute.

The food in the convention center was solid and only slightly overpriced. They have various food vendors set up and you can choose from your traditional convention center food (think pretzels, chicken tenders, hot dogs, etc.) all the way to Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, and so much more. While it is a little overpriced, the food is actually good.

Load out was pretty simple for me because I did not use the loading dock. I just left a half hour early Sunday morning, parked as close as I could to the entrance, and loaded out through the entrance in one go. They did send out an e-mail stating that you could not enter the limited space in the loading dock until all of your things were packed up and ready to be loaded into your vehicle, so hopefully it was a painless experience for those who needed to use the loading dock.

As an artist, it is definitely a con where you might have to do a little more talking and sales-person-ing than normal. It is so big and people are rushing around trying to see every single thing, that they might miss your booth. I definitely spent a lot of the time standing vs sitting behind my booth, and I made sure to greet and interact with anybody that so much as glanced my way so that my booth stood out and did not get lost in the sea of booths.

All in all, it was a good con. So many fun cosplays and so many people to talk to, so there was never a dull moment. From a business perspective, sales were good and I made back all my expenses and then some. The profit margin wasn't huge because my expenses were so high (table fees are $350 for a 6 foot artist alley table), but I did make my money back and then some. I was also able to give out a ton of business cards and network with far more people than most cons. I do recommend this con, but I must warn you it is not for the faint of heart. It is four days long, very crowded, and and energy must be exerted to socialize. This was my second year in a row selling here, however I will not be returning next year due to a small con starting up in my state I'd like to support next year. There is a high chance I will return to Megacon Orlando in the future as an artist in the artist alley because it is such a fun con!

3 Rivers Comicon 2019 Experience

Finally posting a review for my 3 Rivers Comicon experience as an artist in the artist alley! 3 Rivers Comicon is probably in my top 5 favorite comic cons to vend at, and this year made no exception.

This con used to be held at the Century III Mall in West Mifflin, PA. However, due to unforeseen circumstances with the mall, they had to change the location in a short amount of time before the event. Even with short notice of changing the venue, the staff still managed to pull off an amazing and well put together event.

The staff is more friendlier and helpful than any other event I have work, table prices are inexpensive, and they provide refreshments for the artists and vendors. Load in was a breeze and parking was free with plenty available. When I got there, I was surprised and delighted to see that I had a corner space. I talked to some of the staff and was able to buy an extra table from them ($25, and I knew they charged extra for tables so I brought one of my own) so I could maximize my table space.

Hours are not too long, so I was able to skip the hotel, drive back and forth for the event, and still manage to get sufficient sleep. In my opinion, foot traffic and sales were slightly lower than in previous years, but with being forced to move the con to a whole new location on a different side of town with very short notice, it is to be expected. The new location was in an old Macy's building. I have done a few other cons that were in old department stores that did not execute layout well causing the flow of foot traffic to suffer, and I was nervous that this might happen here. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was not the case. While it was easy to get a little lost among the booths, because traditional aisles could not be formed, I feel like the flow of foot traffic was just fine.

My only complaints are that if I knew I was going to have a corner booth, I would have been more prepared and have packed another table(which is half my fault. I should have known better at this point in my artist alley career to have packed an extra small table just in case) and the number of vendors. I think the number of vendors increased from previous years, which isn't always a good thing because when you increase the number of vendors and not the amount of attendants, sales will drop. With that being said, I still think I did well even with the drop in sales. However, if you had to get a hotel for this event, I might reconsider because there may be a chance you will not make enough sales to make up for your hotel costs.

All in all, it was a solid event and I do plan on returning next year. I'm excited to see what the folks at New Dimension Comics are able to do with this event in the new space, and I am excited to see this event continue to grow over the years!
